““The Niagara Foundation, a Turkish organization with the mission of promoting intercultural and religious dialogue, is looking for a couple of part-time interns for the academic year. The internships will involve community outreach, event planning and development work. Positions available include a multimedia intern, who will take pictures and record the events, and a community outreach intern. Both internships are unpaid and will require 10-15 hours a week. Today we went to the Cabinet War Rooms after class, which was a British government command centre during World War II. I was in the underground building where Winston Churchill once stood. I tried to imagine being a civilian at that time and felt a tidal wave of emotion. There are some feelings that cannot be explained, but simply have to be experienced. There are things about war that I’ll never be able to understand, but maybe some things are meant to stay a wonder.

What a week.

I’m so thankful I got to spend it with these folks (I believe I referred to them as ‘hooligans’ more than once). The top photo is all of the VC juniors studying here in Deutschland along with our professor, and the bottom photo is all of the German exchange students who were at OSU last semester.

It was a full house here in the flat. And I couldn’t have been happier about that. Although it was International Seminar Week at HfG, it felt like a mini reunion. I have made some great friends in these Germans, and I was glad to have them around. By the end of the week, we had bonded over sleep deprivation, accidental puns, and a bunch of other shenanigans.

Oh, and they helped my German along. So now I speak this weird hybrid of German English. Pretty cool, huh?

These guys are top notch. Sie sind meine Freunde.

Nun, wir sind so dankbar, dass du es mit uns geteilt! (We didn’t have any German friends around to help us out with our German, so we turned to Google Translate. Verständlich?)

As part of the Ghana Sustainable Change Program, Charisma Acey led a group of city and regional planning students as they traveled to Ghana to create a base map for the Offinso North District. Using iPads and the built-in geolocation services, the students were able to move through the community photographing and geotagging homes, as well as identify needs in terms of water service, waste removal and other basic services. The data was turned over to local officials who are using it to address patterns of needs in their community.

Ohio State students spending three months in Shanghai, interning with the likes of such large corporations as Cardinal Health and Bosch, spent some time with Jake Parker, manager of business advisory services for the U.S. Chinese Business Council — and an Ohio State alumnus — who has been living and working in Shanghai for the past three years.

Parker — who earned a master’s degree in Chinese through Ohio State’s Chinese Flagship Program and serves as president of the Ohio State Alumni Club in Shanghai — provided the students with tips on how to make the most of their internship and shared his insight on the many nuances of doing business in China.

“Today Ohio State students participating in the Global Internship Program in Shanghai received a personal tour of Bosch, a multinational engineering and electronics company that has 350 subsidiaries in over 60 countries. Kevin Zhu, an Ohio State alumnus, worked with Ohio State’s China Gateway office to arrange for a three-month summer internship to be offered to an Ohio State student. Zhu, who received a master’s degree from Ohio Sate in industrial and systems engineering, has worked at Bosch for the past three years, including a six-month stint in Germany, the company’s headquarters.”

Students participating in the China Global May program are learning about the history, culture and society of several major ethnic groups in Chengdu and Sichuan province.

Fast friendships are made between Ohio State students and those from Southwest Nationalities University in Chengdu, China.

Learning about Tibetan Ben Religion … visiting Kuan Zhai Alley, which showcases the architecture of the Qing Dynasty, and is one of three conservation districts of historic sites in Chengdu … send Ohio State students to China, and you just can’t stop them from knowing and engaging the world!
